My Eclectic Retro Room Tour

I have a deep desire that someday I’ll own a house that I can decorate as if it were “stuck in the ‘70s”- shag carpets, sunken conversation pits, geometric wallpaper, big sound systems with a library of records… anything coined the term mid-century-modern, or what some may call, kitschy. For now, I have only a bedroom. That hasn’t stopped me though from gathering an eclectic mix of thrifted and new items to put on display.
Never underestimate the power of your space.

I spend countless hours in my bedroom at college- with the new way pandemic-society is structured, it’s my relaxation haven and classroom- both my muse and my studio, all in one small room. Each part of my room has a different purpose for my life, and I move throughout the space living day to day. When I say never underestimate the power of your space, I mean it, as this is somewhere that I spend most of my time when school is in session, it has the capabilities of affecting an entire nine months of education. A messy, bland, and boring space would have the power to leave me uninspired and unmotivated while an organized, decorated, and exciting space filled with things that make me happy to look at, can make all the difference.
The way my space is organized is intentional for the different needs I have.

I have my bed, where I spend my time sleeping and relaxing. The cozier the better, and my bed is definitely cozy with my collection of stuffed animals from the ‘80s, true vintage, crocheted, wool blankets, and an endless array of pillows. My comforter is a ‘70s inspired print from Society6.

The large collection of photos and posters behind my bed is one of my favorite parts of the room. This collage is different album covers and ‘70s inspired art that I printed onto photo paper and made into the ultimate Ella-collage.

To the right of my bed, I have my keyboard, microphone, and cd player, where I spend most of my free time listening to and making music. My CD player is one I’ve had since I was a kid and is my favorite way to listen to music. And this orange shag rug- truly a dream come true.
My record and mirror wall display is another one of my favorite pieces of wall decor.

To the left of what I like to call my music corner, I have my desk where I attend my classes and do my schoolwork. My desk is an eclectic mix of toys, jewelry, magazines, and books, and sitting at it makes me happy. Some details that are worth mentioning are the one-of-a-kind kitchen chair I got at the thrift store that matches my rug perfectly, as well as the orange clock (also thrifted, surprise surprise).

Honorable mention goes to this vintage lamp I thrifted, again, for only five dollars as well as my Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Creation concert poster recreation. Yes, Frank Zappa does in fact stare at me when I am sitting at my desk.

Continuing onto the left, I have my mirror and makeup set-up by my closet, where I get myself ready and play dress-up every day with my collection of clothes. Having my shoes and clothes on an open display stimulates me to want to put together a new outfit. My closet is like a revolving door because I do clothing resale on Depop, keeping me freshly inspired with "new" pieces.

I even use some of my accessories as decor, with this line of vintage purses hanging on the wall.
Some details that I missed while covering the major sections of my room that are worth mentioning:

This butterfly collage of paper butterflies are from the Dollar Tree and I hung each one up individually. The amount of joy having butterflies in my room gives me is slightly concerning, considering I am a 20-year-old adult, however, you’re never too old to display what makes you happy.

A close friend of mine that I don’t get to see very often gave me these metal rock posters from their childhood bedroom. Seeing them every day makes me smile.

Finally, if my obsession with Steely Dan wasn’t evident enough, I wanted to reiterate that I have Steely Dan merchandise and photos displayed in my room 17 times, including my concert ticket, hung up proudly on my wall.
